FAQs

What do the letters A.N.S.W.E.R. stand for?

American Nepali Student and Women’s Educational Relief.

What is ANSWER’s mission?

  • ANSWER is a non-religious, non-partisan organization dedicated to helping the people of Nepal address problems of poverty through education, primarily by providing educational sponsorships for impoverished students, especially low-caste.

How is ANSWER different from other non-profits?

  • Funds for operating expenses are raised separately (through fundraisers, corporate sponsorships and other outside donations) ensuring 100% of sponsorship donations go directly to the education of students.
  • Sponsors are provided with the unique opportunity to establish a very personal relationship with a student from one of the poorest countries in the world.
  • We provide personal oversight, direction and ongoing career counseling to every student.
  • ANSWER is committed to empowerment rather than dependency. Our goal is to work ourselves out of a job – turning the organization over to our Nepali leadership at some point in the future. And, our graduates are “Paying it Forward” by becoming sponsors of the next generation of students.

Who provides the oversight for ANSWER?

  • ANSWER has an independent volunteer board of directors. Click here to learn more about individual directors and read about our leadership team in Nepal.
  • You can donate to ANSWER with confidence knowing it is a 501(c)3 charity, is registered with the Michigan Attorney General’s Charitable Trust Division, and has annual outside CPA reviews.

How long has ANSWER been helping students?

  • Earle Canfield founded ANSWER in 2001.  ANSWER became a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity in 2007.  Read our origin story here.

How does ANSWER decide which students to support?

Criteria for student selection:

  • Economically poor/disadvantaged: Our students have an average family income of $1,000 or less per year.
  • Educationally bright/motivated: Students must be in at least the 4th grade with consistent school attendance and an A average. Parents must be committed to their child’s education and future career goals.
  • Demonstrate leadership: Students need to show outside interests and activities.
  • Priority to most disadvantaged students:
  • Due to the discrimination women face in Nepal, we support twice as many girls as boys and emphasize women’s empowerment.
  • We also take into consideration social standing (caste). Caste has a long and complicated history in Nepal, but affects family life, food, dress, occupation and culture among Hindus.  We support students in the lower castes when possible.

Which schools do ANSWER students attend?

  • Since universities, businesses and professional careers require English fluency in Nepal, we place students in private schools where classes are taught in English and class sizes are smaller.  Although public (government) schools exist in Nepal, they are overcrowded, teach very limited English, and are poorly equipped.

How much does it cost to sponsor a student?

  • Sponsorship for younger students (Grades 4-10) is $450 per year. This covers tuition, uniform, shoes, books, book bag and school supplies.
  • Sponsorship of students in Grades 11, 12, technical programs and university is $550 per year.

How long of a commitment is it to sponsor a student?

  • A great deal of time and resources goes into selecting students. To be fair to the student, and to remain cost effective, we ask for a minimum 3 year commitment.  Most sponsors are so connected to their students and our program that they continue sponsorship until their student has launched her/his career!

How do Sponsors and Students communicate?

  • We provide letter exchanges. Sponsors receive letters, updated photos, drawings and report cards and in turn send letters and photos to students. Each student/sponsor relationship is unique and develops over time. Sponsors of older students are also in contact through various social media platforms or email.
  • Sponsors can also meet their students in person. Trips to Nepal are coordinated each Spring and Fall. Many of our biggest supporters are those who have seen the work ANSWER is doing first hand through these visits!

How many students does ANSWER support?

We currently have over 600 students who are studying at various levels (upper elementary all the way through Masters degree programs). Through the years, ANSWER has helped with the education of over 1500 young Nepalis.

Do ANSWER graduates help other students?

Yes!

  • A number of older students and ANSWER graduates provide tutoring services for students in need of additional instruction in specific subjects.
  • For students debating a career choice, we have successful graduates speak to them about their own experiences with university courses and career opportunities.
  • We have university graduates who are now sponsoring a student themselves through our “Pay it Forward” program.
  • AAA (ANSWER Alumni Association) members meet once a month for both educational presentations and to coordinate service projects. They helped rebuild homes of fellow ANSWER students that were destroyed in the 2015 earthquakes, have participated in blood drives, hosted medical clinics and raised awareness on the environment. Learn more about AAA here.

How does ANSWER help Nepal?

  • Our graduates are working members of their communities.  They are bringing their own families up out of poverty.  We have students completing degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, law, engineering, forestry, agriculture, food technology, business, computer science and more.  We are already witnessing our students making real social, educational and democratic changes in Nepal.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes!

ANSWER is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity.  Statements are provided at the end of each calendar year for tax purposes.  Your donations can be made via mailed check, online banking, credit/debit card using PayPal, sent through a DAF (Donor Advised Fund) or directly from your IRA administrator.  We also welcome employer matching funds!

How much of what I donate goes directly to Nepal to support students?

  • 100%!  ANSWER raises funds for operating expenses separately through fundraisers, corporate sponsorships and other outside donations.  We take pride in the fact that all the money you give for your student each year goes directly towards supporting their education!

How does ANSWER cover administrative expenses in Nepal and U.S.?

  • ANSWER has a dedicated volunteer board who give their time and talents to raise funds for administrative and operating expenses.  Our founder, Earle Canfield, has been donating his time, travel and other expenses for over 20 years!  ANSWER has been able to do so much with relatively little because of the passion and generosity of the people involved!

What are ANSWER graduates doing now?

  • We have graduates in a variety of career fields: teaching, nursing, pharmacy, midwifery, tourism, accounting, engineering, nonprofit management, lab technicians, health assistants, auto mechanics and more. We will soon have our first practicing physician and currently have 10 young women earning law degrees!
  • We also have graduates who are “Paying It Forward” and sponsoring a student themselves.
