News for November 2010

Hello ANSWER Sponsors & Friends,

WELCOME to our newest sponsors of ANSWER.   Earle spent the last few months traveling through Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Iowa and Indiana making presentations and signing up new sponsors.  Thank you for joining the ANSWER family!

CHANGE THE DATE:

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to change the date of ANSWER’s Annual Benefit Dinner & Silent Auction.  For those of you who live in the West Michigan area please save the date of Sunday, February 20, 2011 for this important event. More details will be given as they become available.

WORDS OF CAUTION:

A sponsor received a Facebook message from an unknown person in Nepal recently.  This apparently came about because an e-mail address was on the back of a photo sent to a sponsored child and a distant relative of the child attempted to make the connection on Facebook.  Your sponsored children are very appreciative of your support and proudly share your letters and photos with their relatives.  To protect your privacy, we remove your mailing address on your envelopes before forwarding your letters to Nepal. We now ask you not to include any phone numbers or e-mail addresses in your correspondences with your child(ren).  The exception to this is those of you who have established e-mail contact with your sponsored college student.   Please keep us informed if any unwanted contacts are attempted from unknown people in Nepal.  Relatives of sponsored children should never solicit you to support their child, too. This is strictly prohibited.

SUCCESS STORY:

ALL 28 of ANSWER’s 10th grade students passed the difficult SLC (Student Leaving Certificate) exam this past spring and are now enrolled in college, bringing the total college enrollment to 44. A special thank you to their sponsors who are continuing with their financial support! There are an additional 29 ANSWER students who have graduated from college and are either currently working in careers in Nepal or have gone onto the university.  Many students have chosen careers in the health field (nursing, pharmacy, lab technician, radiography, health assistant, midwifery) which are in high demand in Nepal with good pay and job security.  The success each of these students has had is a direct result of the very hard work of Som Raj and Bal Krishna, ANSWER’s co-directors in Nepal.

Please refer to the website at: www.answernepal.org to read more personal stories of success in Nepal written by Earle.  Look at the left hand column under “Categories” and click on “Newsletters.”

DID YOU KNOW?

In Nepal students can change their own name until they take the SLC exam at the end of their 10th grade year and become of legal age at 16.  Some of you have experienced this with your own sponsored student.  In the United States it seems impersonal to refer to a person by a number, but this is why it is important for us to assign a number to every student.

Please feel free to contact us any time with any questions, comments or concerns you may have.  If you wish to be removed from this mailing list please contact Lisa.
